There are tools you can use to make sure you’re better prepared to pass the written test the first time. The key tool to use for this is a quality practice test for the Georgia driving test.
Who Needs To Take The Georgia Written Knowledge Test?
If you don’t yet have your driver’s license and want to be able to legally operate a vehicle, you’ll need to first take the written exam for your learner’s permit (sometimes called an instructional permit).
You become eligible to take your written exam once you are 15 years of age in the state of Georgia.
How Should I Study for the Georgia DMV Driving Test?
It can actually take less time to properly study for the written exam when you have a plan and do it efficiently!
You’re going to need a few key resources to study well. First, you’ll need the Georgia Department of Driver Services Driver Manual. This is sometimes abbreviated as the DDS Driver Manual. This is the official manual for the test and is frequently updated, so make sure you have a current copy. Fortunately, you can find this manual on the official DDS website for free.
You should also take a look at your schedule and carve out at least twenty minutes a day where you can study. This is a time where you should be distraction-free and able to focus. Some people may also find notecards helpful.
The last thing you will need are high-quality online practice tests for the exam. These will both help you study and let you know when you’re ready to go take the test and pass on your first try. Fortunately, these can also be found free online, so there’s nothing stopping you. Just be sure to use a quality source so you are getting up-to-date practice questions. You’ll find a link to a quality resource for this below.
Now that you have scheduled some daily time for studying and have your materials together, your next step is to read the DDS manual.
This isn’t always an easy thing for people to do. Your written exam is going to cover road signs and road rules. All of that information is available in the book. It can be difficult to focus on the material, so find ways to read through it that work for you. This may mean highlighting sections as you go, so you better engage with the text, or taking notes. These highlights or notes can also be used to make flashcards later.
Reading out loud to yourself can help with focus. It may also be useful to set five-minute timers. If reading endlessly is difficult for you, reading for five focused minutes may be a lot more digestible. There is no wrong way to make yourself focus, so find whatever works to make it easiest for you, and then do your best to study!
Some people will immediately reread the manual once they finish. That’s a good strategy. Others may want to move to the next step.
For many, that will be their first practice test. The practice test is a great way to see what information you have retained and what more you need to study. Did you do better on road signs or road rules? What topics were hardest for you to remember?
The act of attempting to recall the information will help you remember it later, and the practice results will give you clues on what to study further.
Your next step after this first practice test is likely to either reread the DDS manual, review your notes, or to create flashcards. The work of creating the flashcards, and then testing your recall by using them, is a great way to help yourself retain more information.
Then, take another practice test!
Once you’re passing your practice tests, you’ll know you’re on your way to passing the real Georgia permit test.
What are GA Driver's Permit Requirements and Restrictions?
First, you’ll need to be at least 15 years of age.
Currently, you will need to schedule an appointment at a customer service center to take the permit test. You can do this using their online scheduler.
You will need to bring some documentation with you to apply for your permit before you can take the test. You’ll need Real ID to prove you are a US citizen or have lawful status in the states, proof of your address, and your social security number.
If you are under 18 years old, you’ll need to either provide proof of your enrollment in school or your GED or diploma.
If you were previously licensed in another state, you’ll need to bring your old ID to show.
When you go take the exam, you’ll need to show your documents and pass a vision exam.
Then, you’ll need to take and pass that Knowledge Exam, also known as the written test or Georgia permit test. This will have 40 questions on it. Half of the questions will be on road rules and the other half will be on road signs. You’ll need to correctly answer 15 of the 20 questions for each section.
You’ll be asked to take a photo for your permit and pay the permit fee, which is $10.
If you are under the age of 18, you will need to bring an authorized adult driver to sign your permit.
Once you have successfully passed your Georgia permit test, you will be able to drive with a licensed driver in the car. There are restrictions though.
The licensed driver in the car needs to have a Class C vehicle driver’s license, be 21 years old or older, be sitting in the passenger seat, and be physically able to take over driving the car at any time.
